Deborah Sampson Gannett
Woman Veteran
AMERICAN REVOLUTION
This bronze sculpture of Deborah Sampson Gannett, the only uniformed woman veteran of the American Revolution is located in front of the Sharon Pubic Library, 11 North Main Street. Deborah Sampson enlisted in disguise as a man named Robert Shurtleff and joined the 4th Massachusetts Regiment. Sampson actively fought in several battles and was wounded at Tarrytown, New York. It was at this point that a surgeon discovered that she was a woman. George Washington honorably discharged her in 1783. In 1803, Congress awarded Deborah a federal pension, the first woman in America to receive one. This memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day November 11, 1989.
